Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi.

Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi is suspected of embezzlement by the Italian justice. According to Corriere della Sera (Rome) on June 20, the Italian cardinal is supposed to have "suggested" to the former president of the hospital of the Bambino Gesù, property of the Holy See, to hide from Pope Francis the use of a sum of 30 million euros taken from the public funds destined for the hospital. The goal of this embezzlement was supposedly to save another Roman health institution, the Dermatological Institut of the Immaculate, from bankruptcy.

The prelate, who is at present the prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, firmly denied these accusations, as did the president now in charge of the Bambino Gesù, Mariella Enoc, who declared that "not a single euro" was diverted from the hospital's habitual clinical activities, in a statement reported by the Italian episcopacy's agency SIR on June 20, 2015.

Until last March, Cardinal Versaldi was at the head of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.
