In Spain, the populist left-wing movement Podemos is anchoring its anti-Catholic position: they just presented the Congress of Deputies in Madrid with a proposal for a resolution, asking that the traditional televised Sunday Mass no longer be broadcasted by State TV.

The newly re-elected head of Podemos wishes to do away with the idea that the means of public communication are areas “where any type of religious ceremony is conducted”, on the grounds that Spain is a secular country.

Every Sunday, on TVE2, the televised Mass is the show that records the highest audience for that time. For this last season that began on September 1, 2016, the average number of viewers is 6.6%, or 327,000 people, whereas the average percentage for the channel over the same period is only 2.6%. Paradoxically, the very day the parliamentary resolution was presented, the Sunday Mass had a record audience: 7.1%, or 366,000 viewers.
